UTV and Sky “agreement in principle”

But Granada may block deal.

The Irish Edition of The Sunday Times this week reported that UTV and BSkyB have reached a deal which will allow the channel to broadcast on the Sky Digital service in Ireland. The newspaper has however reported that the deal may be blocked if Granada refuse to allow UTV to broadcast its programmes in Ireland. Granada is understood to be under strong pressure from TV3 to block the move. TV3 shares much of a common peak-time schedule with ITV1 (and hence UTV), but operates a completely different schedule and programming mix off-peak. Granada owns 45% of TV3, and intends to take over Carlton Communications plc next year, becoming ITV plc.

The Sunday Times is owned by News Corporation Limited, which has a 35.4% stake in British Sky Broadcasting plc.
