SCTV's
pricing plan seems to be simular to analogue cable
pricing in the Republic:
SCTV's basic service should do well. It has the same number of channels as Chorus Digital's basic TV Pack and is six pounds cheaper. Carrying on SCTV transformation into a cable company, it proposes to operate a South Coast Community Channel, simular to NTL's Link. Many people would prefer BBC Northern Ireland and UTV, however these will probably replace the Welsh versions after the introduction of DTT. At least by including Channel 4 instead of S4C (which they terrstrially broadcast), they are going some of the way there. The only reasons one would choose Chorus instead of SCTV would be Chorus' TV internet and phone services. However if you want any non-basic channels - there aren't any - another reason to choose Chorus. The Premium service, however, seems rather different to that offered by any other TV operator. For a start, there's no Sky Moviemax. But there is all the extra Sky Premier screens! Film buffs should love SCTV! The strangest thing is the proposed inclusion of the interactive channel, Sky Sports Extra. No provider, other than Sky Digital, carries this service, and it was not known whether Extra was even compatabile with other systems. It was withdrawn from a proposed NTL carrige deal at the last minute, earlier this week. We'll just wait and see if SCTV does what the likes of ONdigital, NTL, and Telewest have been unable to do, and carry the channel. (If it does, it could open the way for SCTV to carry Sky News Active, too). SCTV also plan to offer a PC internet service (though not a TV internet one). MDS International, suppliers of the equipment claim that this service will support up to 56MBPS. In practice, speeds only a fraction of this are likely to be achieve, possibly around 512KBPS. A propriotery PCI card (not the usual Ethernet) is needed on the PC end. You'll also need a modem as the uplink to the SCTV ISP, as SCTV do not have a FWPTMA licence. |
