Latest news is at the top, getting older as you read down. If you have any news, please send me an e-mail. To e-mail me, send the message to rabbits at eircom.net, but replace the "at" with "@" and leave out any blanks. I have written my address like this in an attempt to reduce the amount of spam - hundreds of e-mails trying to sell me Viagra and give me loans. I think some of the perpetrators have programs to automatically pick up e-mail addresses. Our top scoring Rabbits played Wicklow's top Rabbits today at Wicklow. We won the first round 216 points to 200. All that remains this season is the second round of the competition where we play them at Blainroe on the 15th of October. (Ian 08-11-2011)
I found my scrap of paper while looking for something else in my golf bag, so the correct scores are now displayed on the results page for 9th September. (Ian 25-09-2011)
The annual matches against Wicklow will take place on the 8th and 15th of October, so if you were in the top 15 in the GoY, it would be great if you could keep those dates free. The first match on (8th Oct.) will be in Wicklow GC. We beat them last year, and it would be great if we can hold on to the trophy. (Ian 17-09-2011)
With so much going on this weekend I've lost the piece of paper I wrote the results on! What I do remember for sure is that the winner was Kieron McQuaid with a great score of 25 points in very difficult drizzly and misty conditions. The rest of the results have to be confirmed.
We've had our big event - the Captain's Prize to the Rabbits, which was won by Hugh O'Brien. You can see the full results here. The prize-giving for the Golfer of the Year also took place, with David Doyle the clear and well-deserved winner. Unfortunately for him he won't qualify as a rabbit next year, so there is still some help for the rest of us.
All that remains for the Rabbits this season is the competition with Wicklow, so you may hear from Jim shortly as he calls up his selection. (Ian 11-09-2011)
Another 25 point resounding win this week - this time by Gerry McGuinness. Great golf by John Moore got him into second place. Third place went to long-time Rabbit, Cyril Harvey. Mr. Consistency, John Hopkins, came in fourth to win yet another golf glove, and Michael Aylmer played some great golf to come in 5th off a low handicap. Dermot Collins got a two on the 8th hole to win himself a nice bottle of wine. There was a special prize of a bottle of whiskey for the draw this week, generously donated by Tom Kavanagh and won by Jim Long.
Next week is the last game of the season, so it is all to play for.
The time-sheet is now open for the Captain's Prize to the Rabbits on the main Blainroe website. There are still plenty of places left for the meal and prize-giving, so please make an effort to go. (Ian 03-09-2011)
With a resounding win scoring 25 points, Paul Doyle has again made it a Doyle one-two at the top of the leaderboard, a situation that is unlikely to change with only two rounds remaining. Peter Sharkey just pipped Michael Doyle, both with 24 points. Sean Flood had 22 points again, but it only got him fourth place this week. Des Kelly featured once again, this time in fifth. (Ian 29-08-2011)
It's getting close to the end of the season now, with only a few Fridays left. Our winner this week was long-time Rabbit, Tom Kavanagh - his second win this year. In second place, and on the podium for the first time this season, was Dermot Collins. Third was Sean Flood and fourth was GoY challenger Paul Doyle. In fifth place, on his first time playing with the Rabbits, was Ronan Hurley. (Ian 21-08-2011)
Weather conditions were tough on 12th August - there was quite a bit of rain and drizzle with visibility being very poor on the sixth and seventh holes. Nevertheless, the competition was intense with only one point separating first and fifth. Our winner was a welcome returnee, Michael Aylmer, who had not played in the Rabbits for several weeks. Two very consistent players are Brendan O'Connor who did one better than last week, coming in second, while Peter Sharkey equaled last week, coming in fifth. Brendan won't be short of drink, and Peter won't be short of golf balls! Third and fourth were regular Rabbits Michael Doyle and Hugh O'Brien.
Special congratulations must go to David Doyle who on Saturday won the club Captain's Prize and to Ray Kilty who came third. These were great achievements for our regular Rabbits, posting great scores over two 18-hole competitions. (Ian 14-08-2011)
There was good scoring and close competition this week. 21 points didn't assure you of a place. GoY leader David Doyle consolidated his position by coming in second with 23 points, I (Ian McKay) managed to beat him on the countback, but I can't see anyone overtaking him before the end of the season. Top ten men Brendan O'Connor and John Hopkins also featured this week in 3rd and 4th, with Peter Sharkey finishing 5th. Charlie McGettigan won himself a nice bottle of Bordeaux by getting a "two" on the par-3 eighth. (Ian 06-08-2011)
I had the pleasure of playing with Jim Long who was unfortunate enough to lose his ball on the first, scratch the second, but still good enough to bring in a winning score of 23 points on the remaining seven holes. Jim played great golf, and it is amazing that this was his first time on the podium this year. Also on 23 points were Charlie McGettigan and captain Jim Hurley. John Hopkins was once again in the mix with 22 points - don't expect to see this man in the Rabbits next year as his handicap is sure to be too low! Fifth place went to John Rochford, who has been showing a bit of form lately. (Ian 30-07-2011)
Weather was perfect in Wicklow, and there was a great turnout of 34, many more than we usually get at Wicklow. The competition was very close with the top four all scoring 22 points. Luckily it was me, Ian McKay, who won on the countback, followed by John Moore, Tony Whelan and Paul Doyle. Ray Kilty, who got a "two", came in 5th. (Ian 24-07-2011)
Tom Kavanagh was this week's winner, his first trip to the podium this year. The competition was very tough, with Sean Flood also scoring 23 points. Damian Byrne and John Rochford also made their first appearances on the podium this year, with Rabbits regular Tony Whelan coming in 5th with 21 points.
Remember, we are at WICKLOW next week (22nd July) (Ian 18-07-2011)
This weeks winner was Ray Kilty, so he is a man to watch having already been three times in the top five. Third place man Paul Doyle has consolidated his position on the leaderboard, making the Doyle "one-two" almost unassailable. Last week's winner, Hugh O'Brien had a "two" on the par 3 eighth.
In two weeks (July 22nd) we will have our Rabbits competition at Wicklow Golf Club. (Ian 11-07-2011)
David Doyle extended his lead even further this week by coming in fourth. This young man has had a fantastic season so far, and it will be a real struggle for anyone to catch him. First second and third went to people who were late to get going this year - Hugh O'Brien, Cyril Harvey and Tim O'Sullivan, while fifth went to a man who is no stranger to the podium, Gerry McGuinness.
This week past rabbits had been invited to play, and the winner of this section was Liam Fitzpatrick, though it must be said that the opposition was weak! (Ian 04-07-2011) ----- We're back from our Rabbits World Tour of Carlow & Wicklow to a very wet evening on June 24th. Despite the continuous rain, there were very good scores - I don't know how they did it. Terry Dunne, who hadn't played with us for quite a while had a great score of 20 points, followed closely by Brendan O'Connor and Gerry McGuinness (Brendan keeping up his form from our tour). There is now a Doyle one-two at the top of the leaderboard following Paul's 4th Place. (Ian 27-06-2011) ----- I was away last week, so apologies for not having any updates. I hear that David Doyle got a "two" once again - well done!
We had a spectacular win this week from Tony Hickie who had an exceptional score of 28 points - an evening when everything went right! Spare a thought for Jim Hurley, whose great score of 24 only got him second tonight - and also spare a thought for Kieron McQuaid who was playing Tony in the Matchplay. "I parred the 6th and didn't even get a half", said Kieron wistfully.
No Rabbits next week, as it's Open Week and we're off to Mount Wolseley. Late entrants welcome. Try to be there for 1 pm. (Ian 10-06-2011) ----- The news is all about David Doyle this week, who soars even farther ahead in our GoY with a second win this season. Brian Nally made his first move of the season, only losing out on a win by the countback. Peter Sharkey's fourth place quietly moved up to second overall in GoY.
Next Friday, Rabbits are permitted to submit a card to our competition even if they wish to go out early to play in the Lions Club Classic. I won't be playing next week, so apologies if results for 3rd June are late being posted. (Ian 28-05-2011) ----- Rabbits Captain Jim Hurley won himself a nice bottle of wine for getting a "two" on the eighth hole this week, but it wasn't enough to get him into the other prizes. Our winner was Laurence Cullen, coming into form after an early dry patch closely followed by John Hopkins, the most consistent Rabbit this season. In third place was another man who had an early dry patch, Hugh O'Brien, keeping the good form he displayed in Waterford. Fourth and fifth were Denis Hipwell and Paul Doyle (also a very consistent Rabbit!) (Ian 22-05-2011) ----- Last week's winner, Tony Whelan, went on to get a hole-in-one in the Sunday competition, and he very generously treated all the Rabbits to a celebratory drink on Friday, so well done Tony! This week's winner, his first after a long apprenticeship in the Rabbits, was Kieron McQuaid. Peter Sharkey featured once again, this time getting second and moving up to joint sixth in our GoY table. Birthday boy Jim Neilan came third, and we also had a new face on the podium, Mark Diggin in fourth place, with regular scorer Gerry McGuinness following up in 5th.
The draw took place for the Rabbits Matchplay, so the sheet will be on the notice-board next Friday. (Ian 15-05-2011) ----- The average scores were a little better yesterday evening. Tony Whelan had his first win of the season with 21 points, and yours truly came home in second with 19. Leo O'Donnell had his first visit to the podium this year with 18 points. Captain Jim Hurley was unfortunate to only get third with 17 points and tales of "cudda" and "shudda". John Hopkins was on the podium for the second week in a row with 17 points, proving himself to be the most consistent of the Rabbits.
The Rabbits donated the evening's entry fees to the "Blue Dolphins" charity which had its fundraiser yesterday. The Blue Dolphins supports athletes for the Special Olympics.
The draw for the Matchplay competition takes place next week, so if you want to play and haven't put your name down you would want to ring Jim during the week. (Ian 07-05-2011) ----- On April 29th there was only one good score, and that was 23 points for David Doyle. 2nd to 4th all had 17 points, and the rest of us were, to put it frankly, rubbish. On his way to displaying his total superiority, David also won himself a nice bottle of wine for getting a "two" on the 8th hole. (Ian 04-05-2011) ----- There was a surprisingly large turn-out when we played on Thursday this week -we had 42 competitors, a record for this year; perhaps it was the beautiful weather. The winner was Jim Neilan, and we were very disappointed that he couldn't be there to make a speech. Des Kelly and Roger McDermott made their debuts on the leaderboard, whilst David and Paul Doyle played some more spectacular golf to come in third and fourth despite their handicap cuts. (Ian 22-04-2011) ----- John Freeney was our winner this week, which I believe is his first Rabbits Glass - certainly his first for quite a while. Charlie McGettigan, who came second is also a welcome newcomer to the leaderboard. I have put some photos of Rabbits up on the web this week - hopefully I will get some more during the season. Captain Jim announced that our outing will be in Mount Wolseley on 17th June, teeing off in the afternoon. Golf, evening meal, bed and breakfast will cost EUR139 per person sharing or EUR169 single. On our way back on Saturday 18th June we will tee off in Coollattin around 1045. Golf in Coollattin will cost EUR30. Cyril Harvey made his return to the Rabbits this week, once again going home with a golf ball won in the draw. Some day I'll work out how he does it! (Ian 17-04-2011) ----- No Doyles on the leaderboard this week for a change. Our winner was Brendan O'Connor, who has been getting some tips from his brother on how to get out of bunkers (next lesson - how to avoid going into bunkers!). Alan Woodroofe made his second visit to the leaderboard, while Austin Stewart made his first. I had the pleasure of playing with 4th and 5th place men, John Hopkins and Peter Sharkey, but the less said about my own score the better. (Ian 12-04-2011) ----- Conditions were a lot tougher due to a strong gusting wind on our second evening, and the scores reflect that. However, the Doyle father and son combo were able to get onto the leaderboard again, this time with David in front. Eric Levingstone just pipped them into 2nd place on the countback. This week's winner was none other than myself, Ian McKay. Alan Woodroofe came in 5th.
Our outing this year will take place on 17th and 18th June, so keep that date free in your diaries. There will be no Rabbits competition on Good Friday, but it will be pulled forward to (holy) Thursday that week. (Ian 02-04-2011) ----- Our first evening out went very well thanks to the great weather. Paul Doyle made a spectacular return to the Rabbits with an amazing score of 26 points. Paul had an amazing 8 pars and just lipped out for a bogey on the ninth. Welcome back to all our Rabbits, and a special welcome to our new Rabbits Captain, Jim Hurley (who won 2nd prize) (Ian 25-03-2011)
