I don't recall sending a picture of Daniel. Maybe you got it from Bill in which case it would be my grandfather. The Daniel that came in 1875 would be my grandfather's uncle. Just a short note, but I would like to catch up with the Whooleys!! I actually live in Watertown, MA. My grandmother , Catherine Marie (Long) Deasy emigrated to Boston 1892 from near Bandon-- Ballanadee , townland Cloncouse ,County Cork, Ireland 1892 and moved to Cambridge when she married Timothy Deasy (also from the Bandon area--Desert Serges (on the Enniskeane road near Muragh Cross)(he emigrated 1899.)

They were married in 1902 and I just found some more info from thearchives of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston--- We never knew!!!

We always thought that her mother was Ellen Whouley but she had listed her mother as Helen Driscoll. Of course, Whooley is really an agnomen (meaning Proud) a nickname of the Driscoll clan.

So 100 years after their marriage, the family finally knows about the Whooley/ Driscoll connection. My mother is still living--96 years old.

A contact from AOL tells me about Jeremiah Whooley. He was the brother of Margaret Whooley who married Con Hegerty. Jeremiah (from Skibbereen) brought Ellen Hegarty and her brother Daniel to the USA - (his niece and nephew)

Ellen worked as a maid in Boston and eventually settled in Sheldon Township Minnesota. Jeremiah also made the trip there.

The same contact also found another Whooley family in Sheldon Township on the 1880 Census

Sorry for this long delay in replying; my husband needed to check up on any available family history. It's rather sketchy, but here it is, for

what it may be worth: Jerry (Gerard) Whooley, age 50, has for parents Jeremiah Whooley (deceased long ago) and Margaret Heinrich Whooley,

remarried as Margaret Stokes. Jeremiah had a brother Harold and a sister Genevieve. Their parents were Jeremiah (sometimes called Gerald) Whooley

and Josephine Smith Whooley. After coming to the states, they lived in New York City, but it isn't clear whether Jeremiah, senior, originally

came from England or Ireland. If my husband's looks and sense of humor are any indication, I'd vote for Ireland!

I came across you website and thought I'd tell you about my Hooley ancestors. I grew up in Albany NY but live in Northern Virginia now.

My great great grandparents were Edward and Bridget Hooley. I believe >that Bridget's maiden name was Canfield. From what the census records

reflect about where and when their children were born, it appears that they emigrated from Ireland in 1847 or at the height of the famine.

They came to Green Island, NY across the Hudson from Troy. There were already Canfields and Hooleys in Green Island and Troy. My great

grandmother was their child Eliza who was 3 in 1860. She married Edward Wallingford at St. Joseph's in Green Island in 1883 and the

witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Canfield. I suspect that Thomas Canfield may have been Eliza's cousin. Edward and Eliza had my grandmother Margaret Wallingford. Margaret married William O'Neil in 1910. William died at 33 in the flu epidemic of 1918 and left Margaret a widow with four young children including my mom Betty. My mom

married my dad Walter O'Brien in Albany in 1940.

I've tried to trace the Hooleys and Canfields back to Ireland. I understand that Hooley or Whooley is most common in west Cork. This is

consistent with a surname distribution study that I commissioned a couple of years ago. Cork may have been the only county where both the

Hooleys and Canfields could have come from. Please let me know if any of this is of interest and let me know if you have any ideas about further research. Thanks, David
