| Our story
begins with the birth of Cornelius Whoula ( as it
was on his birth certificate) on the 1st July 1827.
There is sufficient evidence to believe that Cornelius's
parents were Michael Whoula and Cath Mountain. Cornelius
was born in Lissaclarig. The marriage records in the
Church in Killeenleigh show the marriage on 12th Feb
1857 of Cor Hooley to Johanna Harrington (of Bawnishal)
by Father Daniel Finn and the witnesses were Denis
Harrington and Michael Donovan. In relation to Johanna,
there is a death record on the 4th July 1869 lfrom
Lissaclarig, Kilcoe, a farmer's wife with Con Wholey
present at her death.
What of the name "Mountain".
There is an old reference to "Mountain" as an
appellation (common at that time) as being in Kilmalooda
parish which is in East Carberry and that the family
name was Carty or Mc Cartys. The Griffiths valuation at
the time uses the same "nickname" from time to time to
distinguish different families. As regards to the Whoula
and the different spelling of what is now "Whooley" it
must be remembered that the area was widely Gaelic
speaking and official documents were kept in English-
and at the time no official spelling in English existed
for the Gaelic names.
